The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Extra Booster Introduction Part 1: SOS Brigade

Welcome back to the Weiss Schwarz Weekly Column! We’re back this week with another upcoming set preview, this time for the new Extra Booster for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya!

Being an Extra Booster, this release will feature a total of just 27 cards, so we’ll be splitting this preview into two articles. Today, we’ll be taking a look at some cards that feature and support the 《SOS Brigade》 trait, as well as a very special event card.

Time Travel, Kyon & Mikuru

【CONT】 All of your other 《SOS Brigade》 characters get “【AUTO】 Encore [Put a character from your hand into your waiting room]”.

This is a great effect that will help to keep your key 《SOS Brigade》 characters on the field, although it can be rather taxing on your hand size. You will definitely want to have excellent draw power to back this card up, but it will surely pay off in the long run.

【AUTO】 [【Rest】 this card] When another of your characters is put into your clock from the stage, if this card is 【Stand】, you may pay the cost. If you do, put the top card of your deck into your stock.

This effect primarily synergizes with your costs or effects that send cards to your own clock from the field. It isn’t much, but gaining 1 additional stock can sometimes be the exact thing you need. Another thing to note is that opponent effects that send characters to your clock from the field will also trigger this ability, so you can actually gain stock on your opponent’s turn against certain decks!

“Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody” Haruhi

【AUTO】 [(1)] When this card is placed on the stage from your hand, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose a 《SOS Brigade》 character in your waiting room, and return it to your hand.

This card may not have the 《SOS Brigade》 trait, but it has an ability that allows you to retrieve an 《SOS Brigade》 character to your hand. It is reasonably costed, too, so you won’t break the bank trying to get a key card back to your hand.

【AUTO】 When this card attacks, if a card named “I am here” is in your climax area, you may choose a character in your waiting room, and return it to your hand.

As if one retrieval effect is not enough, this card packs a second one – and this one isn’t trait restricted! This retrieval effect is a climax synergy that allows you to return any character to your hand when it attacks. Due to it possessing two different retrieval effects, this card has lower power than the average level 2 character, but I’d say these effects are well worth it.

Swimsuit Haruhi and Flower Viewing, Haruhi

【AUTO】 [(2) Put this card into your clock] When a card named “End of Summer” is placed on your climax area, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose a card named “Flower Viewing, Haruhi” in your waiting room, and put it on the stage position that this card was on.

This card’s cost is on the high side, but for good reason. It can Change on the turn you play it out before you attack, and it becomes a massive 10000 power wall that your opponent will be guaranteed to be running characters into. Play this together with Time Travel, Kyon & Mikuru to extend its longevity, on the off-chance that your opponent manages to overpower you!

When played with Time Travel, Kyon & Mikuru, you also get a discount; since Swimsuit Haruhi will be sent to the clock, Time Travel, Kyon & Mikuru’s effect will trigger and net you half the stock cost back.

Endless Eight

【CONT】 You can put up to eight cards with the same card name as this card in your deck.
【Counter】 Put this card into your memory.
Choose one of your 《SOS Brigade》 characters, and that character gets +X power until end of turn. X is equal to 1000 multiplied by the number of cards named “Endless Eight” in your memory.

Fans of the animation will know definitely remember Endless Eight! It is unique in that a total of 8 copies of this card can be played in your deck, and it comes with 8 different artworks! Although the card is sent to the memory upon use, it powers up for each Endless Eight in your memory. As being placed in the memory is part of the effect, the very first Endless Eight you use will give you +1000 power, and the eighth use will give you a whopping 8000 power!

Although this article is titled SOS Brigade and mostly features 《SOS Brigade》 cards and synergy effects, Haruhi decks have to play around the fact that sometimes certain characters may not have 《SOS Brigade》; for example, Swimsuit Haruhi has 《Brigade Leader》 and 《Swimsuit》 traits. There are, however, certain cards that support these alternative traits as well, such as Autograph Session Mikuru, which lets the player search for a character with the 《Time》 trait. You can include Autograph Session Mikuru specifically to search for Time Travel, Kyon & Mikuru, while also using it for the usual Assist effect as well. Skillful planning to work around the lack of 《SOS Brigade》 on key characters will definitely help you out as you’re building your deck!
